Office 07 – Pin a document to “Recent Documents”

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I can’t even believe how silly I feel about this post.  I have previously noticed the little gray tack on the recent documents list in all of the Office 2007, but I had no idea why it was there.

So what’s it for?  To PIN the document there.  DUH!

Like when you have a steady stream of documents, the older ones disappear, right?  Not if you pin it… :-)

Click the Office Button in the upper-left corner of your Office program (Excel, Word, or PowerPoint).

Your Recent Documents will be displayed on the right side of the menu.

Locate the desired document (if it’s not there, click Open and browse to the document so it will be added to the list).

Select the corresponding Pin (to the right of the document’s name) so that it turns green.

Green = Pinned.

GENIUS!

Offisync – Google Docs on Steroids

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

If you aren’t using Google Docs to safely store your important documents, you should be – but that’s another post.

This is for you smarty-pants who are already using Google Apps, and more specifically Google Docs.

It’s no secret that Google Docs doesn’t have quite the same functionality as the MS Office Suite of products.  But with Offisync, you can easily save a file in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, and with OffiSync set up, it will save simultaneously to your Google Apps space. You get the feature-rich editing services of Office and the easy sharing and peace-of-mind storage of Google, all at once.

Did I mention the price tag?  FREE!

Tighten Up that Word Document (2007)

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

How frustrating is it to set up a beautiful Word document, only to have the last page only have two words on it?

That drives me crazy!

MS Word 2007 can try to shrink the document by one page by slightly reducing the size and spacing of the text in the document.

1. With the Word document opened, click the Office Orb in the upper-left corner of the window.

2. Mouseover Print and select Print Preview.

3. Using the Ribbon, go to the Preview section.

4. Select Shrink One Page.

Word will attempt to shrink the document. It will either complete or pop-up a failure message that lets you know that Word was unsuccessful. Once completed, close the Print Preview window and save the document.
